Why I love being a Doula

Why I love being a doula

I love getting to know you. I take so much enjoyment from meeting new people and spending time with them. That is one of the main reasons I became a doula. Meeting for coffee/tea dates or meeting to have a manicure or a pedicure are amazing ways to chat, bond and just spend time together. Of course, we will have our “official” prenatal appointments, but it is so important to me to get to know you as a person. We will be spending a lot of time together in the last few weeks and days leading up to the birth of your baby.

I love helping you prepare for baby

Preparing the nursery for baby

Seriously, this is where my organization OCD comes into play! This task may be overwhelming for a new mom (I know it was for me!), but I absolutely enjoy helping new parents gather the things they will need to prepare for baby and to get the nursery ready.  There are thousands of little knick-knacks available to purchase for your little and I will help you to make sure you pick what is needed to get through the first few months, from onesies and blankets to bibs and sleep sacks.

I love to help you pack for the hospital

Get ready for that hospital visit

Every parent over-packs for their short stay at the hospital. You never know what you are going to need, right?! Well, I have created a few lists of essential items you will need for you and baby. One of the things at the top of my list is: bring your own pillows! I cannot advise enough how much more comforting having your pillows will make your labour and your stay at the hospital more comforting. Just the scent from your pillow can help you dilate:)

I love listening to you

Being there for you

Being your Doula means being a non-judgemental listener. I want to know how you’re feeling, what you are thinking and what you are going through. Think of me as your belly therapist, waiting and wanting to hear your fears and your hopes. If you need to vent or you just want to share some exciting news, I am your woman! There is nothing more fulfilling to me than being allowed to have a peek inside your head and support you when you need it the most.  If there is anything I have learned from my years of meditation practice, it is that listening is the highest form of intimacy that can be created between you and another person. So, please, reach out to me as little or as often as you need it. I am here.

I love helping you feel safe

A doula is there to support you

This is one of my most important jobs as your doula. There is nothing more important than ensuring your safety and your baby’s safety. I will educate you and inform you so that you are able to make the best decisions for you and your family. I will empower you and teach you to advocate for yourself to have the best birth you could have. If a scary situation should arise, I will never leave your side or your baby’s. I will gently explain to you what is happening, and I will be there for you.

I love helping you merge into motherhood

the journey of motherhood

The transformation from woman to mother is amazing. It has to be one of the most beautiful transformations I have ever witnessed. It surprises me, how little attention is given to a woman who has just completed the momentous journey into motherhood. You see, one of the most important aspects of my job as a Doula is to mother the mother. When all eyes are on that sweet little bundle of joy, my eyes are on you. I will be there to guide you through this crazy, beautiful world we call motherhood. Infant care, postpartum care, and breastfeeding help are always available. If you need to rest, or just a shower, I will be there. If you’re nervous about baby’s first bath, I can help you. A new mother should never feel like she is alone.

I will always be grateful, honoured and privileged to be your Doula. And if I could tell you thank you every day I would.  Every birth touches my heart. Every birth brings a lesson, and I am grateful for finding my purpose in life.
