What Food do you Bring to a Birth?

Have you ever been getting ready for birth and realize you don’t have any decent food to pack in your Doula bag? You never know how long you’re going to be gone and most hospitals food options are vending machines, especially if your at a birth all night long. So your left with very limited options when it comes to food. So its best to plan ahead! So what should you pack in your Doula bag to eat?

I really feel that when your attending a birth your best option is to eat healthy. Most healthy foods can require minimal cooking and can last a long time in your bag, especially if you’re at a very long birth. And sticking to the basics, and less complicated food is better. Also  you don’t want food that has too much of a scent (won’t be great around a labouring mom) and you don’t food that makes too much noise when you eat it. You also want to eat food that is sufbstantial and filling.

I always like to have my doula bag ready to go, so I also suggest having foods that will last and not go bad. So what kinds of foods are these?

I put together a list below of items that I have brought with me to births and have kept me sustained through those long hours!

What to Pack!

  • Granola bars
  • Dried fruit (Mangoes, Apricots etc)
  • Trail mix
  • Bagel and cream cheese/butter
  • Chips
  • Crackers
  • One serving fruit cup or pouch
  • Bottled water/Juice
  • Coffee tea espresso in a thermos [this one is my favorite]
  • Apples
  • Oranges
  • Banana
  • Yogurt
  • Favorite candy
  • Mints
  • Gum

The goal with this food is to keep your energy up and even. You never know how long you’re going to be at a birth for and you don’t want to be exhausted with hunger. And if your exhausted with hunger, you may not be able to help this mother the way that you really would love to. So it is important to plan ahead and get your doula bag ready with nutritious and delicious snacks to keep you going!

Are there any foods or snacks you love to bring to a birth? I would love to add a few to my list, that I may have missed! So please share in the comments below! I would love to hear them.
